Mid-Season Lawn Care Tips for Kodiak Residents
☀️Summer’s rolling along, and while our rainy weather keeps everything green, it can also wash away the nutrients your grass needs to thrive. That’s why a mid-season check-in is the perfect way to give your lawn a little love. I’ve got some easy tips for you, plus a heads-up that I’ve got a few spots open for my affordable Kodiak lawn care services in July and August. ✨ Let’s make your yard the star of the neighborhood! 💫
Why Mid-Season Care Matters in Kodiak’s Rainy Climate
Living in Kodiak means dealing with a lot of rain ☔️…beautiful for our scenery, but tricky for our lawns. All that water can rinse away key nutrients like nitrogen and potassium, leaving your grass looking a little lackluster by late summer. 🫠
A mid-season boost with feeding, fertilizing, or compost helps your lawn stay strong 💪🏼 and vibrant.
Here’s why it’s extra important in our soggy climate:
Nutrient Replenishment: Rain leaches nutrients from the soil, so adding them back keeps your grass happy.
Root Strength: A mid-season feeding encourages deeper roots, which handle wet soil better.
Pest Protection: Healthy lawns are less inviting to slugs and other critters we know too well!
A quick check-in now sets your yard up for success all season long. Plus, it’s simple and affordable, especially with the right supplies from our local friends at Rooted Kodiak.
3 Easy Tips for Mid-Season Lawn Care
You don’t need to be a lawn expert to keep your grass thriving. Here are 3 practical steps with Kodiak yards in mind:
1. Feed Your Lawn with Fishy Peat or Organic Fertilizer
Head over to Rooted nursery right here in Kodiak for some top-notch lawn food. I recommend their Fishy Peat, a local gem made from fish waste that’s loaded with nitrogen. Spread a thin layer across your lawn, and let the rain work its magic.
You can grab some organic fertilizer from Rooted, too (sometimes the fishy peat sells out!). Their team knows what works in our rainy climate and can guide you to the perfect pick. A little sprinkle, and your grass will perk right up!
This is also a great time to check in with your bushes and flowering shrubs with a little extra nourishment. Ask Janelle or Judy about what they have in stock to help care for those. My mom has been working hard the last few years on our front hedge, which was pretty sickly when we first bought our home. It took trimming and pruning along with extra care for nutrients in the soil, and now the hedge is thick, green, and we’ve been surprised by little flowers that bloomed a couple years ago! She adds compost regularly, which leads me into the next point…
2. Add Compost for a Healthy Boost
Compost is like a secret weapon for your lawn. It improves soil health, holds moisture (super handy here!), and feeds your grass slowly over time. Spread about a half-inch layer over your yard. It’s that easy. It’s a budget-friendly way to give your lawn some extra love. I will be doing a series on how to start composting soon! Also, if you want help with chores like this, I am available and would happily come lend two hands! 🙌
3. Mow High to Protect Your Grass
In a rainy place like Kodiak, keep your grass a bit taller—around 3 inches. This shades the soil, keeps roots protected, and helps your lawn fight off weeds and slugs. I know it may seem like 3 inches is too high, but this time of year, a little extra length can make your lawn look great and stay healthy! As you cut the lawn (or have me do it) instead of bagging the clippings and taking them away, consider mulching, if your mower is that type. If mowing feels like a chore, don’t worry, I’ve got your back with my lawn services (more on that below!).
These tips are quick, doable, and perfect for keeping your Kodiak lawn in top shape, rain or shine.
